48 Hours in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City was honestly suppose to be a short layover on our road trip. But the two nights we spent there made me realize I would love to go back for a longer stay.

Antelope Island State Park

Antelope Island State Park is about 45 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City. The entrance fee was $15 per car. Once you get into the park, there’s miles and miles of scenic driving.

Just a disclaimer, I was there at the end of May, which is apparently when the gnat eggs hatch. There were so many gnats in the air. They’re harmless but still not something I enjoy having in my face. I saw some prepared people with hats and nets to protect them.

Buffalo Point

We were coming from multiple days of hiking in Moab, so I opted for shorter hikes this day. Buffalo point is about a 0.8 mile hike with panoramic views of the lake. The parking lot for the hike has a large deck with picnic tables and great views of the lake. Good place for lunch/snack.

Dooley Knob

We checked out Dooley Knob trail as well. This was a moderate 2.8 miles hike. The overcast day and the fact that this was one of the least busy state parks I’ve been to made the hike so calm and peaceful.

Bisons!!!!

Driving along the main road, we saw so many bisons and some so close! Another first here, seeing herds of bisons! We stopped by the side of the road and watch them all slowly move through the park

Bonneville Salt Flats

The Bonneville Salt Flats are about 45 minutes outside of Salt Lake City and were 100% worth the trip to go to. The actually Bonneville Salt Flat is at a rest stop pretty close to the Utah/Nevada border, which means a good amount of parking spots and restrooms too. I saw people driving out ontop the salt flats with their cars, but we left ours out in the parking lot and chose to walk around there.

Olive loved running in circles and rolling on the salt flats. I made sure to limit our time out there because the salt on the ground will irritate her paw pads. Make sure to rinse your pup’s paws off to once you’re back in the car.

If you packed your dog booties and want to spent extended time here, I suggest taking the time to put them on to protect your dogs paws from the salt.
