Weekend in Marfa, Texas

IMG_1363.jpg

We took a spontaneous trip to West Texas and it was all that I had hoped for. Marfa and West Texas are the perfect place to slow down. There are definitely plenty of things to do and see, but also there is absolute quiet and calm (specially if you go during the week day. Lots of shops, art studios, and attractions are only open Thursday-Sunday).

Where to stay- El Cosmico: There are lots of beautiful Airbnbs and hotels in Marfa, but I opted for a Safari tent in El Cosmico since it was just Olive and me. It’s minimal, but has all the amenities you would need- including a heated mattress for those chilly nights.

El Cosmico also has Yurts, Teepees, and Trailers for more room.

things to do:

  • Prada Marfa- Obviously, you have to stop by the Prada store front. Last time I was in Marfa, we opted to not go, which made me even more excited to go this time with Olive. It was about a 45 minute drive from Marfa but I enjoyed the drive through the West Texas road. Bonus point if you can find the other Prada store front about 2-3 miles before the actually Prada.

  • Marfa Lights- Marfa is known for having these ghost / mystery lights that are unexplained and attributed to UFOs and paranormal phenomena. Marfa Lights Viewing Area is just outside of town and on a new moon clear day, its an amazing spot to stargaze and look for those mystery lights.

  • Walk down the main street and check out the different shops and art studios. No need to wake up too early to walk around town. Most shops and studios open a little later in the day and have limited hours outside of Thursday to Sunday.

  • Chinati Foundation- They have amazing outdoor installation that I loved going to. Check online for reservations. Things to note are that its not dog friendly.

Place to eat

  • Frama- Ice cream, Coffee, AND laundromat all at the same time? yes please! You can’t take your pet in with you, but they have a covered seating just outside so you can enjoy your coffee and ice cream in the shade.

  • Do Your Thing- I had the friendliest baristas that let me walk in with Olive to order. One of the stresses of traveling alone with a dog is having to leave them outside or in the car while ordering food. Places let her in while I’m ordering make me really happy!

  • Marfa Burrito- This place was recommended to me by several people and the host at El Cosmico. Unfortunately it was cash only so I didn’t get to try it this time.

  • Aster- grabbed a bagel and coffee on my way back to Austin. I had to stop myself from ordering all their other amazing pies and pastries. Their patio was cozy and dog friendly!

  • The Sentinel- souvenirs, coffee, breakfast tacos all in one beautiful shop!

  • Para Llevar - THE BEST margarita pizza I’ve ever had!! I had planned on getting my pizza to-go until I realized they had an amazing backyard! it was the perfect place to enjoy lunch and people watch.
